Volunteer Invigilators required as The Great Tapestry of Scotland returns to Verdant Works!

Great Tapestry of Scotland @ Verdant Works
26 August – 22 October

A stunning record of Scotland’s history, created by over 1000 volunteer embroiderers, the Great Tapestry of Scotland is the largest community art project ever to take place in Scotland. The full tapestry consists of 160 panels, and at 143m is the longest tapestry in the world. The first exhibition at Verdant Works, Dundee’s jute and social history museum, took place last year between March and May. It proved fantastically popular, attracting almost 8,000 visitors during its run. This new display will exhibit 82 beautifully detailed panels depicting important historical events such as the Vikings invasion of Scotland, the massacre at Glencoe, the first Edinburgh festival, the Miners Strike in the eighties and the founding of Scottish Rugby with the first Scotland v England rugby match. We will also be redisplaying 7 of the most popular panels from last year including the two sections highlighting the history of the city, ‘The Discovery Sails from Dundee’ and ‘Dundee: Jute, Journalism,’ both stitched by local volunteers.

We need to have two people with the Tapestry at all times – to both meet and greet visitors and help answer their questions as well as for security reasons. (Full briefing/training will be given.)
The Tapestry runs for 8 weeks and is open 7 days a week. We are looking for volunteer invigilators for both weekday and weekend shifts which are 4 hours slots from 10am – 2pm (Sunday 11am – 2pm) or 2pm – 6pm. If you are willing and able to help, could you please let us know your preference/availability re days and times of the week. This can be for one or more slots. Ideally we would like people to sign up to the full run of the exhibition but volunteering can be flexible to fit around your other commitments. We will work up a detailed week by week rota once we have this information from everyone.

The Tapestry is a really positive development for the museum and your support in help ensuring its success would be really appreciated.
